What is the relationship between IBS and the FODMAP diet?
The acronym FODMAP refers to the foods that should be avoided or reduced in the diet of a person with irritable bowel.
Fermentable oligosaccharides, disaccharides, monosaccharides, and polyols in some people are not 100% absorbed from the small intestine.
So these unabsorbed molecules continue their way to the large intestine, where they act as food for the bacteria that normally live in it. There the bacteria ferment the FODMAPs and cause the symptoms described in the definition of irritable bowel syndrome.
Therefore, a low FODMAP diet could help reduce the symptoms of irritable bowel syndrome and also other inflammatory bowel diseases such as ulcerative colitis or Crohn’s disease.
