Basic DIY home fragrance tips
The basics of making a homemade fragrance are mixing alcohol, distilled water and essential oil drops. The precise formula: ¼ cup of vodka, 25 drops of essential oil of your preference and 1 cup of distilled water. This tip will do each time you want to prepare yourself different flavors for different occasions. All you need to do is shake vigorously and apply the mixture.
For adding a masculine, feminine, flowery, refreshing or sensual scent, you’ll need to play with the ingredients.
- Masculine scent: add sandalwood or cedar oil
- Feminine: add vanilla oil
- Flowery: add geranium, lavender or patchouli oil
- Refreshing scent: add bergamot or orange oil
- Sensual or heavy note: add rose or violet oil
The actual recipes
Eau de cologne
You’ll need ¼ cup of water, 12 drops of lemon oil, 12 drops of bergamot oil, 10 drops of orange oil, 10 drops of geranium oil, 3 drops of neroli oil and 6 drops of rosemary oil.
Feminine fragrance
Slit open two vanilla beans and mix them in 3 ½ ounces of vodka. Let them soak for 2 days, then remove the pods. Add 1 cup of distilled water and your perfume is ready to use.
Summer scent
Mix 1 tablespoon of vodka, 5 drops of bergamot oil and 10 drops of each: mandarin orange, neroli, orange, lemon and rose oil. Add 3 ½ ounces of orange flower water and leave it on a dark place for a week.
Violet perfume
Take 3 ½ ounces of violet flowers, ¼ cup of distilled water and 1 ½ ounces of vodka and mix them. Let the mixture steep for a week and strain it. Add additional 3 ½ ounces of distilled water and start using it.
Tip: You can always substitute rose or lavender flowers for the violets, depending on your choice.
Rose water scent
Put 3 ½ ounces of rose petals in ¼l of boiling water. Let the mixture steep for one hour and strain. After you’ve removed the petals, put the rose water back on heat and add 3 ½ more ounces of rose petals. Store them in a dark bottle for a few days then use it.
